KUALA LUMPUR, May 16, 2024 — Petronas subsidiary Suriname E&P BV has recorded its third hydrocarbon discovery in Block 52, offshore Suriname, at the Fusaea-1 exploration well. The announcement, carried in the company's corporate communications published at https://www.petronas.com/, positions Fusaea-1 as the latest addition to a growing sequence of finds within the block.

The well is located about 170 km offshore and 9 km east of the Roystonea-1 discovery, one of the earlier hydrocarbon finds in the same block. The proximity of the new well to an existing discovery is central to the company's framing of the result: finds that sit close to one another can in principle be tied back to shared facilities rather than developed in isolation, which is the starting point of any integrated development concept.

The Fusaea-1 well: campaign parameters

According to the company's statement, the Fusaea-1 campaign was delivered on the following parameters:

spudded in February 2024;
drilled to a total depth of 5,227 metres;
completed with zero lost-time injuries;
located about 170 km offshore Suriname;
positioned 9 km east of the Roystonea-1 discovery.

Each of these figures carries weight beyond the well itself. A total depth of 5,227 metres places Fusaea-1 among the deeper wells of an offshore exploration campaign, where drilling time, well control and cost discipline are tested simultaneously. The zero lost-time injury record speaks to the execution side of the same campaign: deep offshore wells are long-duration operations in which safety performance is measured across every shift rather than at the end of the job.

Safety as a campaign metric

The company's emphasis on zero lost-time injury frames the discovery as an operational result as much as a geological one. In offshore exploration, a single lost-time incident can suspend a rig schedule and reset an entire campaign; delivering a 5,227-metre well without one is presented as part of the achievement alongside the hydrocarbon find itself.

Management comments

The discovery was presented in corporate statements by Datuk Adif Zulfikfli, upstream chief executive officer of Petronas, and Mohd Redhani Abdul Rahman, vice president of exploration. "These discoveries have significantly expanded the prospectivity and integrated oil and gas development potential within Block 52," the company said, referring to the sequence of finds now recorded in the block.

The wording is deliberate. "Prospectivity" addresses what the subsurface may still hold: every discovery recalibrates the geological model of the block and re-ranks the remaining undrilled prospects. "Integrated oil and gas development potential" addresses what the company intends to do with that knowledge — evaluate the discoveries not as separate fields but as a connected portfolio of accumulations.

What the discovery sequence means for Block 52

Three discoveries in a single block change the nature of the asset. A first find proves that a working petroleum system exists; a second begins to define its extent; a third, positioned 9 km from an earlier discovery, starts to outline a cluster that can in principle be produced through common facilities rather than a series of stand-alone developments.
