LG Energy Solution to Boost Productivity 50% by 2028 Through AI Transformation, CEO Says

LG Energy Solution Ltd. (LGES), the South Korean battery manufacturer, will boost productivity by 50 percent by 2028 through a company-wide AI transformation, CEO Kim Dong-myung said. The programme covers the company's eight battery plants — one in South Korea and seven abroad — and proceeds in parallel with the company's ramp-up in the United States, where four additional plants are scheduled to start operations in 2026, among them the Arizona complex under construction since April 2024.

AI transformation to lift productivity 50% by 2028

SEOUL, April 13, 2026 — LG Energy Solution Ltd. (LGES) will raise productivity by 50 percent by 2028 by means of an AI transformation, CEO Kim Dong-myung said. The target, announced by the chief executive, places automation and data-driven decision-making at the centre of the company's manufacturing strategy for the remainder of the decade.

The announcement defines productivity as the headline measure of the programme: an improvement of 50 percent against the company's operating baseline, to be reached by 2028. By making the AI transformation the core of plant operations rather than a set of isolated tools, LG Energy Solution intends to strengthen the competitiveness of its production network while its capacity build-out continues.

Eight plants within the scope of the programme

The AI transformation extends across the company's entire manufacturing footprint of eight plants: one facility in South Korea and seven plants abroad. Because the programme covers the whole network instead of a single pilot site, the productivity target is set for the company's global operations as one coordinated effort.

With all eight sites in scope, the improvements sought under the CEO's plan accumulate across every production line of the network, including both long-operating facilities and sites that are only now approaching start-up.

US ramp-up: four additional plants to start in 2026

In parallel with the productivity programme, LG Energy Solution continues to expand its manufacturing base in the United States. Four additional US plants are scheduled to start operations in 2026, adding new capacity to the company's North American footprint during the same period in which the AI transformation is being introduced at existing sites.

  1. the AI transformation rolled out across all eight existing plants;
  2. the start of operations at four additional US plants in 2026;
  3. the 2028 deadline for the 50 percent productivity gain.

Arizona complex among the US ramp-up

One element of the US ramp-up is the Arizona complex, a US$5.5 billion site under construction since April 2024 with operations targeted for 2026. The complex is designed around 46-Series cylindrical batteries for electric vehicles and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) pouch-type batteries for energy storage systems (ESS), with an annual output capacity of 36 GWh of cylindrical cells and 17 GWh of LFP cells once completed.
