Q2 2025: record profit on a record top line

SEOUL, August 7, 2025 — Kakao Corp., an internet company headquartered in South Korea, has reported its results for the second quarter of 2025. The report was carried by Yonhap News Agency, whose article is available at https://en.yna.co.kr/view/AEN20250807003700320. Corporate announcements and investor materials of the company are published on its website at https://www.kakaocorp.com/.

The key reported figures for the second quarter of 2025 are as follows:

Both profit lines and the top line moved in the same direction in the quarter, and two of them set records: the operating profit of 185.93 billion won is the highest quarterly figure the company has recorded, and revenue of 2.028 trillion won is likewise a quarterly record. The near-doubling of net profit, from 87.15 billion won to 171.82 billion won, is the most eye-catching single movement in the set, and it is the figure that gives the quarter its headline.

Margins and cost discipline behind the record

The company's operating margin for the quarter stood at 9.2% according to its release. The margin was supported not only by revenue growth of 1.2% but also by the expense side: operating expenses of 1,842.4 billion won were 2% lower than a year earlier. A top line that grew while the cost base contracted is the arithmetic behind a 39% rise in operating profit on revenue growth of only 1.2%: the gap between the two rates shows how much of the profit improvement came from cost discipline rather than from volume alone.

Two engines: platform up 10%, content down 7%

The quarter's revenue of 2.028 trillion won was produced by two divisions moving in opposite directions. The platform segment, which includes the KakaoTalk messenger, grew 10% year on year to 1.055 trillion won. The content division contracted 7% to 973.1 billion won, a decline attributed to weak gaming. The platform side therefore passed the one-trillion-won mark for the quarter while the content side fell below it, and the combined figure still set a quarterly record because the platform's gain outweighed the content's loss.

The split matters for reading the record. A 1.2% rise in total revenue is a modest number on its own; underneath it, a 10% expansion in platform revenue did the work of offsetting a 7% contraction in content. Had the platform segment grown more slowly, the content decline would have pulled the total below the prior-year quarter, and the record top line would not have been recorded at all.

What drove the quarter: advertising, commerce and equity gains

Three drivers stand behind the result:

  1. advertising revenue, the core monetisation of the platform's audience;
  2. e-commerce, the commercial stream attached to the same platform;
  3. equity gains from Kakao Pay and Kakao Mobility, the company's payments and mobility affiliates, which lifted the profit lines from outside the platform itself.

Advertising and e-commerce sit inside the platform segment that grew 10%, while the equity gains arrived from affiliates and supported the profit lines directly. The combination is notable because it does not depend on a single business: a quarter carried by three separate sources is less exposed to a setback in any one of them than a quarter carried by one. That is the context in which the record operating profit of 185.93 billion won, the 9.2% operating margin and the 97% rise in net profit should be read, even with the content division shrinking on weak gaming.
